Things to do in the lower Hutt Area
Local Shopping
Westfield Queensgate Shopping Centre is located on the corner of
Queens Drive and Bunny Street in the Lower Hutt CBD. It offers
seven-day shopping with department stores, supermarkets, and over 50
fashion stores. There is covered car parking adjacent.
Jackson Street in Petone offers a huge
variety of specialty shops, cafés, bars and restaurants that supply a
wide range of ethnic foods, great coffee and goods not available
anywhere else. History and
Culture
The Petone Settlers Museum is located on the Esplanade, on Petone's
foreshore. The museum provides an insight into the migration and
settlement of people into the Wellington Region.
The New Dowse Art Museum has an ever
changing display of contemporary works from New Zealand and abroad. The
Dowse is located on Laings Road in the city's Civic Centre and has an
excellent cafe on site.
Beaches and Rivers
Lower Hutt lies on the banks of the Hutt River. The river is a popular
recreation area with walking tracks and access points for canoeing and
swimming. Good trout fishing can be had throughout its length with large
brown trout inhabiting the pools close to Motel 22.
There is a sandy beach all along the
Petone foreshore, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Other swimming
beaches are at Days Bay and Eastbourne – plus trendy shops, restaurants
and cafes. Beyond Wainuiomata,
the Rimutaka Forest Park is a wilderness area popular for hiking,
picnicking and river swimming.
